How generative engines find answers
When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot or Google’s AI Overviews a question, the system usually searches an index, reads a handful of pages, and writes a summary with links to its sources. Your goal with GEO is to be one of those sources.
That depends on three things: the AI system must be allowed to read your page, it must be able to understand what the page says and who wrote it, and it must judge the page trustworthy and specific enough to quote.
GEO vs SEO
GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Most AI search products start from a classic search index: ChatGPT search and Copilot lean on Bing, and AI Overviews use Google’s index. If you do not rank or are not indexed, you are rarely cited.
What GEO adds is a focus on clear entities, quotable facts, AI crawler access, and content that answers questions directly.

The GEO checklist
- Allow AI search crawlers. Check robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, Googlebot and Bingbot.
- Render content in HTML. Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. If your text only appears after scripts load, they see an empty page.
- Describe your entity. Add Organization or LocalBusiness schema with your name, logo, address, contact and sameAs links to official profiles.
- Publish llms.txt. A short Markdown summary with links to your key pages.
- Write citable content. Specific numbers, dates, definitions and original data are far more likely to be quoted than general claims.
- Show who is behind it. Author names, credentials, reviews and an About page build the trust AI systems look for.
- Get listed in Bing. Submit your sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools.
How to measure GEO
There is no Search Console for AI answers yet. Practical signals include referral traffic from chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com in your analytics, and manually asking assistants the questions your customers ask. A EmojiCry audit checks the technical side: crawler access, llms.txt, entity schema, server-rendered text and citable facts.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. AI search engines mostly rely on search indexes, so strong SEO remains the foundation. GEO adds the extra signals that make AI tools choose and quote your page.
How long does GEO take to work?
Technical fixes such as unblocking crawlers can take effect within weeks as pages are recrawled. Building the authority to be cited often takes months.
